1.1 Location

The Asian Barometer 2014 Survey covered the entire Mongolia and had eight major study areas based on 76 electoral districts: Ulaanbaatar (capital city), Western, Northern, Central I, Central II, Central III, Eastern and Southern regions.

1.2 Population

The total population of Mongolia in 2013 was 2930.3 thousand, up 2.2 percent compared with previous year. Of the total population, 48.7 percent were males and 51.3 percent females. The number of births reached 79.8 thousand. the life expectancy at birth reached 69.11 years, 75.01 for women and 65.42 years for men in 2013.

1.3 Government

By the Constitution of 1992, Mongolia is a parliamentary democracy. The State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia is the highest organ of State power and the supreme legislative power is vested only upon the State Great Hural. The parliamentary elections held once in four years to elect 76 members. The President is elected by absolute majority vote to serve for a four year term.

The State Great Hural is unicameral and consists of 76 members elected by mixed electoral system. 48 of them are elected by mixed member proportional system representing single member constituencies and 28 are elected by proportional representation system.

In 2013 there was a sixth presidential election since 1990’s democratic transition. Of 1864.3 thousand registered voters for the 2013 Presidential election, voter turnout was 66.5 percent. Ts. Elbegdorj (Democratic Party) won with 50.2%, B. Bat-Erdene (Mongolian People’s Party) got 41.9 %, N. Udval (Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party) Got 6.5 % respectively.
